I am writing a small program to allow my server to send ir commands to my iTachs. Currently I am closing the socket after a period of no commands being sent and am just wondering if there is any good reason to do this (or not do it). There will be a maximum of four devices communicating with my iTachs (3 mobile devices and the server).

Technically there is no reason to disconnect, as there are 8 available sockets which should not close on you unless there is a network related hiccup. Logic to reconnect to a lost socket should likely be implemented, but sustaining a connection will allow you to remove any delay that establishing a connection will cause.

I am closing the ports because I am also communicating with some gear that only supports one connection. So in order to keep the app running on my server and still have my handsets able to connect I have to shut those sockets down. Next time I revisit the code I'll make an exception for port 4998.
