IP2IR: Sensor 'IN'...what purpose?

I'm wondering what exactly I can do with the Sensor IN port on the IP2IR.  Is it strictly to learn codes?  I was under the impression I could connect an IR receiver and send IR commands via IP to my PC, where automation software such as Homeseer could trigger an event to do stuff, like z-wave light controls.  Better yet, I could connect a 3.5mm cable to the IR out on my URC MRF-260 RF base station to the SENSOR IN on the IP2IR.   Is that possible?

Reading closer, the GC-100+GC-IRE+GC-RG1 IR Receiver seems to be what I need to do what I want.

  Thanks, that helps a lot.  Here's another question for you.  I have a 2 wire IR receiver that is a legacy of an old Niles IR repeater I once had in a built-in wood stereo cabinet.  It is surface mounted, looks good, and the wires are dropped to where i would place a GC-100.  Can I solder a 3.5mm connector onto that receiver and plug it into the same port on the GC-IRE that I'd connect the GC-RG1?  Any special wiring pointers?

  Yes, the input on a GC-IRE can be used with a Niles IR receiver. In order for that to work properly, you will need to attach the signal line to the tip of the connector and the ground to the ring. This will allow you to properly receive IR signal from the receiver for use as an input into your system. Whether or not your receiver will require an outside power source is going to be something you will need to figure out. If necessary, you may need to connect a power supply to the receiver external to the IRE in order for it to be properly powered.

  Why not just add the ability to accept sensor inputs to the IP2IR?  

  This flaw makes your product useless for me.

  Do I understand this correctly? I have a global cache now from which al sensors are sensor out, so command they receive are sent to the tv or whatever?

  Is any of following  possible?

  1. Input on  sensor 1 from an IR remote control is sent to senors 2 and 3, see the itach as an expensive IR receiver.

  2. input on sensor 1 on itach 1 from a standard remote control in the bedroom upstairs is sent to output on sensor 1 on itach 2 in the cabinet in the living room.

  Sadly, the GC-RG1 nor any other IR receiver is supported on the iTach product line. Currently, the GC-RG1 requires a GC-IRE to digitize IR signal and output the information via an RS232 connection. We currently do not have an IR passthrough mechanism built into our units, but software does exist that will allow you to do what you are intending. AVSnap, running on a PC on the network, is capable of taking an IR input (GC-RG1 + GC-IRE) to one of our IR outputs, and their website is linked below.
