Integrating iTach WiFi units with Ubiquiti APs

The iTach WiFi uses an older 802.11b wireless protocol. This protocol is not enabled by default on Ubiquiti APs.

To enable 802.11b and allow the iTach WiFi to connect follow the instructions below:

1) From the home page of the Unifi management screen, select the "Settings" Icon on the bottom left.
2) Once in Settings, click on your Wireless network.
3) Click on the Advanced drop-down to expand it.
4) Click the toggle for "Legacy Support" to enable it.

5) Scroll down and click the "802.11 Rate and Beacon Controls" drop-down to expand it.
6) Click the toggle for "2G Data Rate Control" to enable it.
7) Pull the slider down to 1Mbps.
8) Click Apply Changes.

Note (06/27/22): On UAP-AC-Pro (and potentially other AP models) 802.11b connectivity appears to be broken in later firmware versions. For UAP-AC-PRO users please use version 4.3.28.

    I upgraded my unify controller to 5.11.50 and after that the itach refused to connect to to the wifi. 

    After countless resets and re-setups i gave up and reverted the controller software to 5.11.47 and the itach started working again.

    I've the exact same problem.
    My current config:

    Also unifi controller 5.11.50
    UniFi AP-AC-Pro version 4.0.66.10832
    Lagacy mode is on.
    minimum data rate control 1mbps on 2.4 radio.
    Also the SSID For 2.4 and 5 GHz is splitterd.
    DTIM: default values checked.

    The Itach is standing under a access point, so it could not be a out of range problem.

    Hello Krister and Julian,

    Thank you for the reports.  We have obtained an AP-AC-Pro AP for testing and are able to successfully connect the iTach WiFi with the following controller and AP versions.

    UniFi Controller: 5.12.35

    UniFi AP-AC-Pro version: 4.0.69.10871

    I was so glad to come across this thread.  When i upgraded to 5.12.66 my iTach was unable to associate with the legacy network any longer.  I manipulated as many settings as seemed reasonable, but no luck.  I then downgraded to 5.12.35 and iTach came right back online.  I'd love to know the plan for the future?  Would like an iTach that could support current protocols.

    For those having problems after upgrading the AP Pro, it was necessary for me to do both: legacy settings and lower data rate control.  Before things worked with just the Unify Legacy setting checked.

    I upgraded to the new UDM-PRO with controller 5.14.18 and even with these settings that worked previously with a USG-3 on controller 5.12 no longer works....

     

    Controller 5.14.18

    UDM 1.8.0-rc.7.2870

    AP-AC-PRO 5.25.0.11957

    Latest controller version on ui.com is 15.13.32 and the settings are working for me.  In the Wifi Network where iTach is associated I set the Data Rate to 1Mbps for 2G data.

    That Wifi Network is assigned to a Wifi Network Group that has Legacy Support Enabled.

    On controller 6.1.19.0 with the legacy ssid on a nanohd, got the itachs to connect to wifi but couldn't ping them. Go to settings, and turn off new settings. Under wifi, your ssid for legacy devices, make sure the option for

    Block LAN to WLAN Multicast and Broadcast Data
     
    is off. I can then ping and control the itach. Set the dtim on that ssid to 1 for 2.4. Set the ssid to only broadcast on 2.4 (not sure if this matters but it is set)
     
    edit: updated the beta firmware on the ac-lite ap and the GC devices quit working. Rolled back to the release version and it fixed it. Just adding because it can be just as simple as your AP version having an issue with 802.11b.

    Is anyone running the latest, 6.2.25?  Like above, I can see the devices connect in the logs and see them in the client list, however, can't ping.  The legacy is set and beacon lowered.  This use to work just fine.

    I saw your comment show up yesterday and noticed I was still on 6.0.45.  Took some time and upgraded to 6.2.25 this morning.  My ITach connected right back up and is pingable and devices are functioning as expected.  AP is a UAC-AP-Pro.  I can check other settings if you want to throw questions out.  I am only utilizing 2.4GHz band and Legacy support is enabled.

    Thanks for the follow up.  Good to hear confirmed working.  I read threads where the AP firmware could be causing issues and just dont know what rabbit hole to start down.

     

    Here's what I have for settings pretty straightforward I would think.

    My Unifi controller is running:
    6.2.25 (Build: atag_6.2.25_15316)

    I have nanoHDs running

    My settings match except that I do not have Enable Multicast Enhancement (IGMPv3) enabled.  I'm also running different AP's.

    The article has been updated for UniFi Controller 6.2.26. For previous controller versions (down to around 5.25) here are the instructions:

    The iTach WiFi uses an older 802.11b wireless protocol. This protocol is not enabled by default on Ubiquiti APs.

    To enable 802.11b and allow the iTach WiFi to connect follow the instructions below:

    1) From the home page of the Unifi management screen, select the "Settings" Icon on the bottom left.
    2) Once in Settings, select Wireless Networks
    3) Click on the "pencil" icon on the far upper right of the screen to edit the "WLAN Group" settings. NOT the "EDIT" on the same line as the AP Wireless Network name.
    4) Select the checkbox for "Enable legacy device support (i.e. 11b)".

    5) Edit: Set the Name fields to match the WLAN group name that contains the wireless network the iTach will be connected to.
    6) Click on "SAVE"

    What firmware are you running on your UAC-AP-Pro's?  I have an open ticket with Ubiquiti.  Asking about a difference in firmware between the two APs. Shot in dark.

    Do you have a separate SSID for the ITACH devices?  Throwing out info to see if it helps.  I have a dedicated SSID for iTach.  I also have an AP group so I can limit the Legacy support to just the AP closest to the iTach.  That group is only broadcasting 2.4GHz.

    Not dedicated to the wifi2cc's.  The operate on an NoT network SSID.  I have some older non Unifi APs (legacy) that I am going to try.

    I also updated the Unifi ticket with all the details.  As mentioned, I use to work just fine.  Somewhere in the upgrades, connectivity has been lost.

    Just wanted to provide an update.  

    In working with Ubiquiti support, they have had be downgrade the firmware on my nanoHDs to version 5.43.19, and all is back to working.  I am waiting to hear back on long-term resolution and will follow up.  But right now, all by wifi GC units are back online.

    Anyone needing to downgrade, here were the instructions from support: 

    ``` upgrade https://dl.ui.com/unifi/firmware/U7NHD/5.43.19.12493/BZ.mt7621_5.43.19+12493.201207.1102.bin ```

    Update from Ubiquiti:

    Hi,

    I'd recommend staying on this firmware until the next official firmware is released.

    Once again, sorry for the trouble caused so far.

     

    I asked if this fix will be referenced in the release notes.  No response just yet.  Worse case, flash and if cant pass traffic, reload version 5.43.19.12493.

    Does anyone know what the latest supported working firmware for AP-AC-Pro is?  I downgraded all the way back to 4.3.28 because that is what I was on prior to the system auto upgrading.
